    Guilty Crown (Blu-ray), Early Review

Fuji TV’s noitaminA block has been very good to us animation fans in recent years, having provided us with more than a few interesting shows (including Eden of the East, a personal favorite of mine.)

    GuiltyCrown-Cover

With Funimation’s upcoming release of Guilty Crown, a recent noitaminA series, do we have another interesting series from the respected and venerable animation block worth your time and money? (more…)

Dragon Age: Dawn of the Seeker (Blu-ray/DVD), Early Review

The Fanboy Review is back with its second ever joint review! Join Alex and me as we take an early look at the first animated adaptation of the popular Dragon Age franchise.

Co-produced by EA and Funimation Entertainment, Dragon Age: Dawn of the Seeker made its debut in Japanese cinemas back in February and will be hitting US shelves on May 29.  This is the first bit of animation that is a Funimation ‘original’ (rather than a licensed film/show.) How does their first original production hold up? (more…)

  • Eden of the East (Blu-ray), Early Review

Eden of the East… a series that shows love of American film and hope for the future of Japan… and a guy who has misplaced his pants.

A 2009 series that is highly respected for many things, will it be as respected now that it has jumped across the Pacific? (more…)

  • The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya: Second Season, Early Review

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya… one of the more popular series of recent memory.  After three years the series returns with a new season.

After having such a well received first season that blew quite a few people away can season two possibly stand up to its predecessor? Does it need to? Or would a few extra adventures with fun characters be enough?  Guess we will find out… (more…)

  • Toradora!: Volume One- Premium Edition, Early Review

A new company arrives with a series that has a bit of a following.

Toradora! is finally coming to the USA via NIS America.  Rather than just getting the vanilla treatment though, NIS is going the premium route for their anime releases.  Does Toradora! (last time I use the exclamation point…) end up being a good start for them? (more…)

  • Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood- Part One (Blu-ray), Early Review

One of the more popular anime and manga series of the past decade returns.

Yes yes, Fullmetal Alchemist returns.  Rather than a sequel to the first anime series, this new series is taking the true to the manga route.  Is Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood already a shining piece of steel in its first 13 episodes, or does it come up a little… short? (more…)

  • Dragon Ball Z Kai: Part One (DVD), Early Review

I bet you are wondering why I’m reviewing Kai again…

I decided since I have both on hand to not leave our DVD only friends hanging without proper caps and a review.  When it is appropriate I’ll be using text from the Blu-ray, but anything that is different for the DVD version (packaging, video quality, audio, etc) will be freshly written.  And as a small note: Any grades I give here will be specific to what is expected or wanted from a DVD, so if a video or audio grade is higher here than it was in the Blu-ray review, it does not mean the DVD is superior. And if you want to read the Blu-ray review first: Dragon Ball Z Kai: Part One (Blu-ray), Early Review (more…)

  • Dragon Ball Z Kai: Part One (Blu-ray), Early Review

The franchise that will never die returns, but on Blu-ray in a new ‘refreshed’ version.

Yes, Dragon Ball Z returns as Dragon Ball Z Kai.  After stacks of releases in the USA, including the Dragon Boxes, is the modern refresh of Z on Blu-ray the new high bar for the series in the USA? (more…)

  • Strike Witches: The Complete Series, Early Look/Review

As we’ve heard for many months now, and even longer if you go back to when it was brand new and streaming, there is a war. A war against… pants.

Strike Witches is arguably the antithesis to the shows we tend to see from Funimation, with not only mass market appeal, but being relatively niche and a centerpiece in arguments in online communities. So let’s check it out… Yeah, I couldn’t think of a good pants line to use here… maybe I’ll put that up as a contest this weekend… (more…)

  • Evangelion 1.11: You Are (Not) Alone (Blu-ray), Early Review

Evangelion returns.  After a long wait (and avoiding the DVD version to wait for the Blu-ray for many people, myself included) the first of the new Evangelion films has made it to Blu-ray in the USA.

With the series hitting 15 years old, is the Rebuild of Evangelion something to look forward to?  And after quite a few Blu-rays that aren’t exactly up to snuff, is this the Blu-ray Funimation finally gets it right on? (more…)
